What Do the Sensor Lights Mean on My Garage Door?

Every garage door opener has two safety sensors at floor level, one on each side of the door. One sensor (usually amber/yellow) is the sender. The other (usually green) is the receiver.

Both lights solid: sensors are aligned and working normally. If the door still won’t close, the problem is elsewhere (check the wall button, remote, or opener logic board).

Green light blinking or off: the receiver is not getting a clear signal. Something is blocking the beam, or the sensors are misaligned. Most common cause.

Amber light off: the sender has no power. Check the wiring connections at the sensor head and at the opener unit above.

How Do I Fix My Garage Door Sensor in 5 Minutes?

Step 1: Clear the beam path. Look for any object between the two sensors: a spider web, a piece of cardboard, a child’s toy. The beam travels at floor level across the width of the door. Remove anything in the path.

Step 2: Wipe the sensor lenses. Salt air and garage dust coat the small lenses. Use a dry cloth to wipe both sensor eyes. This fixes roughly 20% of sensor calls we receive.

Step 3: Realign the sensors. Loosen the wing nut on the blinking sensor and gently adjust it until the green light goes solid. Retighten. The sensors must be aimed directly at each other at the same height.

Step 4: Check the wiring. Trace the thin wires from each sensor up to the opener unit. Look for pinched, cut, or corroded wire. Any break in the wire will cause the sensor to fail. If the wire is damaged, it needs to be replaced — this is a $50–$120 repair we can do same-day.

When Should I Call a Tech for Sensor Issues?

If you’ve done all four steps and the green light is still blinking: the sensor itself may be failing (sensor replacement: $80–$150 installed) or the opener logic board has a sensor circuit fault (board replacement: $180–$320).
