Garage Door Opener Beeping or Blinking: What It Means
Updated November 2026 · Part of our opener guides
A garage door opener that beeps or blinks is trying to tell you something, and the message is usually simple. Most of the time it is the backup battery, but the same signals can point to a power outage, a closing alert or a sensor problem. The exact patterns vary by brand and model, so check your manual, but the common ones are below.

The Most Common Cause: The Backup Battery
Many openers have an optional battery that keeps them working in a power outage. Manufacturer quick-reference guides for models such as the Chamberlain B970 describe the pattern this way: a flashing orange light with a beep about every 30 seconds means the battery is low, a solid orange light with a beep about every 2 seconds means the opener is running on battery power, and a flashing green light means the battery is charging. Other models are similar, but check yours.
| What you hear or see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A beep about every 30 seconds, with an orange light | The backup battery is low or failing | Replace it with the battery type your manual lists |
| A beep about every 2 seconds, with a solid orange light | The opener is running on battery after a power loss | Wait for power to return, which is normal |
| A flashing green light | The battery is charging | Give it time |
| Beeping and a flashing light only while the door is closing | An audible warning, which many openers give when the door is closed from an app or remote you cannot see | Normal. Check the manual if it bothers you |
| Beeping or blinking after a close that reverses | A safety sensor problem on some models | See our sensor troubleshooting guide |
| The opener light blinks a set number of times and the door will not move | A diagnostic code | Count the flashes and look up the code in the manual |
Why Does the Battery Beep When the Power Is On?
- The battery is simply old. Backup batteries often last only a year or two
- Heat in a closed South Florida garage shortens battery life
- The battery was removed or disconnected on a model that expects one
- The opener is not charging the battery, which can mean a fault in the charging circuit
A battery that beeps and a battery that fails during an outage are the same problem, so do not ignore the warning.
Beeping After a Storm or an Outage
If the opener beeps while the power is out, it is running on its battery and the beeping is normal. It should stop when power returns and the battery recharges. If it keeps beeping for days after power returns, the battery or its charging circuit has probably failed. Our hurricane guide explains what else to check after a storm.
Reading Blinking Lights
- Find the model number on the motor housing, then look up the diagnostic chart in the manual
- Count the number of flashes on the motor’s indicator light, since each count usually maps to a specific fault
- A blinking wall control can mean a lock mode or a communication fault
- Blinking sensor lights point to alignment or wiring, as our sensor repair page explains
What Not to Do
- Do not unplug the opener just to silence it, since the problem is still there
- Do not leave a backup model without its battery and assume it will work in an outage
- Do not open the opener housing
- Do not bypass or disable the safety sensors
When to Call
- The beeping continues after you replace the battery
- The light flashes a code you cannot find in the manual
- The door will not move at all
- The opener hums but does not lift the door, which may point to a spring problem

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my garage door opener beep every 30 seconds?
Usually the backup battery is low or failing. Check the indicator light, and replace the battery with the type your manual lists.
How long do garage door opener backup batteries last?
Often only a year or two, and less in a hot garage. Replace it on a schedule instead of waiting for it to fail.
Is it okay to remove the backup battery?
The opener will still run on household power, but it will not work in an outage. Some models may keep warning you. Replace it if you want outage protection.
Why does my opener beep when I close the door from my phone?
Many Wi-Fi openers sound a short beep and flash the light before closing from an app, so anyone in the garage has a warning. It is normal.
