What Damages Garage Door Panels?

Garage door panels take more abuse than most people realize. A panel is a thin skin over insulation or a frame, and it has to hold its shape through thousands of cycles, sun, rain and the occasional bumper. These are the usual causes of damage.

  • A vehicle bumping or backing into the door
  • Storm debris and wind-driven objects
  • Rust along the bottom edge from standing water and salt air
  • Sun and heat that fade, warp or crack finishes and fiberglass
  • Moisture that swells wood and composite sections
  • Stress from a door that is out of balance or off its track
  • Failed hinges or loose struts that let a section flex

Panel damage often points to a bigger problem. The track, hinges and cables near the damage deserve a look before anything is replaced. If a section has shifted, see our off-track repair page.

Can a Damaged Garage Door Panel Be Repaired?

It depends on the type of damage. Some damage is cosmetic and some weakens the section.

DamageUsuallyWhat to know
Small shallow dent, no creaseOften leave or minor repairA shallow dent does not weaken the panel, so repair is optional
Deep crease or buckleReplace the sectionA crease weakens the panel and can crack along the line
Cracked or split skinReplace the sectionCracks spread with every open and close
Surface rust on the bottom edgeTreat and refinishCatch it early and keep the bottom seal in good shape
Rust through the bottom edgeReplace the sectionRust eats the metal and spreads under the paint
Delaminated skin or peeling layersReplace the sectionLayers do not re-bond once they separate
A warped section that no longer lines upReplace the section and check balanceA section out of line can bind in the track

A technician checks the track, hinges and cables as well, because the panel is often the visible part of a larger problem.

Can I Replace Just One Garage Door Panel?

Often yes, if a matching section is still available for your door. Sections are made for specific door lines, widths and finishes, and manufacturers change colors and profiles over time. A match is more likely on a newer door from a current line. On an older door that has been discontinued, it may not exist.

What decides whether a match is possible

  • Whether the manufacturer still makes the section for your model
  • Your door’s width, panel design and finish color
  • Which section is damaged, because the bottom and top sections carry hardware
  • Whether neighboring sections and hinges are also bent

If no match is available, the choices are repairing the damaged section or replacing the door.

Why Does the Bottom Section Need Extra Care?

The bottom bracket anchors the lift cable, and the cable is under spring tension even when the door is closed. Loosening that bracket without releasing the tension can cause serious injury. That is one reason section replacement is a technician job, not a weekend project. The top section is also special, because it usually carries the opener bracket and takes the opener’s pull.

Struts, the horizontal stiffeners across the back of wider sections, also matter. A damaged panel may have lost strength where a strut attaches, and a replacement section needs matching reinforcement for the door’s width. Our cable page explains why those bottom brackets are not a do-it-yourself part.

What Happens During a Panel Repair or Replacement?

  1. Inspect the damage. We look at the panel, the neighboring sections, hinges, track, rollers and cables.
  2. Secure the door. Spring tension is released safely before any section is removed.
  3. Confirm the match. If a section is being replaced, we check that the new one fits your door’s model, size and finish.
  4. Transfer the hardware. Hinges, rollers and struts are moved to the new section or replaced if worn.
  5. Install and align. The section goes in, the hinges are set, and the door is checked for a straight, even fit.
  6. Retension and balance. The door should stay put when released halfway.
  7. Safety test. We check the sensors and the auto-reverse before we leave.

South Florida Conditions That Wear on Panels

  • Salt air. It attacks scratches and chips in steel finishes, so touch up damage early.
  • Standing water. Water that sits along the bottom edge starts the rust. A good bottom seal and a dry floor help. See our seal replacement page.
  • Strong sun. Fiberglass and some finishes can fade or crack over time.
  • Storm debris. Wind turns small objects into hazards for the lower panels.
  • Humidity. It swells wood and composite sections.

A rinse with fresh water now and then removes the salt film, and our maintenance page covers the seals and hardware that protect your panels.

After a Storm or a Vehicle Hit: What Should You Do?

  • Do not run the opener until the door has been checked
  • Photograph the damage if you plan to contact your insurer
  • Look for bent track, pulled brackets and loose cables
  • Keep clear of a door that is leaning, sagging or hanging crooked
  • Call so a technician can make the door safe

If the damage is serious or the door has come off its track, see our emergency garage door repair page. If the door needs replacing, a new one has to meet Miami-Dade hurricane-zone requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one dented panel be fixed without replacing the door?

Often, yes. A shallow dent without a crease is mostly cosmetic. A deep crease or crack weakens the section, and that section is better replaced. A matching section depends on your door’s model and finish.

Will a new section match my door color?

If your door line is current, the manufacturer usually offers a matching section. On older or discontinued doors a perfect match may not exist, and finishes can differ slightly after years of sun.

Is it safe to keep using a door with a cracked panel?

Avoid it. A crack weakens the section and can spread, and the damaged part can catch in the track. Have the door looked at before running it again.

Can rust on the bottom of the door be repaired?

Surface rust caught early can be treated and refinished. Rust that has gone through the metal needs the section replaced. Keeping the bottom seal in good condition slows it down.

What if a storm caused the damage?

If one section is damaged, it may be repairable. If several sections or the track are damaged, the door may need replacing, and a new door has to meet current Miami-Dade requirements.

Why does my door look crooked after being hit?

Sections can shift, hinges can bend, and the track or a cable can be affected. A crooked door should not be run until it has been inspected.

Can I paint or touch up the panels myself?

You can touch up chips with paint made for your door’s material after cleaning and drying the area. Treat rust before painting, and avoid painting over a damaged or peeling surface.

Do I need a permit to replace a single section?

Replacing a section is generally repair work on an existing door rather than installing a new one, but rules vary by job. If you are unsure, confirm with the City of Miami Gardens Building Services Division.
